Week 7: The Halfway Point

This week, I officially began teaching my full course load! In some ways it was easier than I anticipated, but in others, it was more difficult. Teaching a full course load is certainly keeping me busy! I'm keeping it together for the most part, but I did forget to set up a lab one day before class (oops, back to the checklist I go). Fortunately, I was able to get it set up pretty quickly and still had enough time to get the lab done. I would probably consider that my low point of the week, so I'll count myself lucky, since it wasn't a huge deal.

One of my high points of the week also came from the lab that involved my low point, ironically enough. I split up the students into two groups so that we could get the most out of the time, while still following all COVID guidelines. I separated two students that seem to cause small issues in class; as expected, I saw that they weren't as bad when they weren't together. One of them was like a whole new kid! From here on out, I'll have to choose the groups or partners for that class. As much as I would like to let the students have autonomy in selecting groups, a couple have spoiled it for the rest. Hopefully, by the end of my experience that class can get to a point where I can give that privilege back to them.

As of the end of this week, I am officially halfway through my student teaching experience! I feel like I just started yesterday, but I guess time really does fly when you're having fun!

  1. Alyssa,
It sounds like your adjusted well in your "lab preparation" issue. I am glad to see you are testing some classroom management strategies to identify what works in certain situations. Keep up the good work and I look forward to hearing how the next couple weeks of "full-load" teaching goes!

  2. Hi Alyssa - labs are so hard to get done in one period. I sympathize and if you don't have it set up for the students the time crunch is REAL. I'm curious what your COVID protocols are related to labs at Central Columbia? My students have to work individually and have their own supplies and equipment has to be sanitized after each use - which means hardly any collaboration :(

I've heard of several online name generators like "The Wheel of Names" that would pick partners for you, might be worth a try.
